Eyelid Surgery and Ear Surgery

For patients who are unhappy with the appearance of their eyelids or ears, plastic surgery can often help make a significant impact on their lives.  We offer patients cosmetic eyelid and ear surgery.  These procedures are designed to help a variety of people, from young children who are teased for protruding ears to adults whose eyelids are drooping with age.  As one of the most highly regarded plastic surgery practices in the Greenwich, Stamford, and Westchester County areas, we perform cosmetic eyelid and ear surgery to help our patients feel more confident about their overall appearance.

Eyelid Surgery

We perform eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), to help patients look younger and feel more vibrant.

As people age, the skin and retaining tissues around the eyes lose their elasticity, making the eyelids appear wrinkled and often leading to the appearance of bags beneath the eyes.  This may make someone look older than they feel or look tired even when they are not.  Sometimes, upper eyelid skin laxity can be so extreme that it can obstruct vision.  Blepharoplasty removes the excess skin and fat from around the eyes in order to create a more youthful, alert, and attractive appearance.  Eyelid surgery is sometimes combined with a full or mini-facelift for a more dramatic result.

The Eyelid Surgery Procedure

Performed while the patient is under local anesthesia with a sedative or general anesthesia, eyelid surgery generally takes two to three hours, depending on the needs of the patient.  We mark where the incisions will be made, carefully following the curve of the eyelid to maintain a natural look.  We then excise the excess tissue that has loosened with age. When the surgery is complete, we use fine sutures to close the incisions so that scarring will be minimal.

After Eyelid Surgery

After surgery, patients may experience pain, swelling, and bruising around the eyes.  Some patients also experience dry or teary eyes or sensitivity to light.  These symptoms generally subside within a week or two and can be controlled with medication or eye drops.  Patients who experience these symptoms preoperatively are encouraged to see an ophthalmologist prior to cosmetic eyelid surgery.  On most occasions, patients look and feel well enough to return to normal activities within 7 to 10 days after surgery.

We are known for our careful attention to detail, keen artistic eye, and superior technical skills.  Patients who are seeking cosmetic eyelid surgery should contact our cosmetic plastic surgery practice for more information. We also offer permanent makeup to enhance the eyes.

Ear Surgery

Ear surgery, or otoplasty, is most frequently performed to pull protruding ears closer to the head or to improve the overall shape, position, and contour of the ear.  Parents may seek surgery for children with prominent ears in order to diminish the teasing they encounter at school.  This is usually done on children between six to eight years of age.  Adults who feel self-conscious about the appearance of their ears can also benefit from cosmetic ear surgery.  Other common procedures performed on the ear include correction of large, stretched, torn, or deformed earlobes and reconstruction of ears damaged from disease, surgery, birth defect, or injury.

The Ear Surgery Procedure

The techniques used in cosmetic ear surgery vary according to the needs of each patient.  In performing the common technique to correct protruding ears, we make an incision behind the ear. We then sculpt the ear by folding, scoring, or removing cartilage, position it closer to the head, and secure it with stitches.  This procedure usually takes two to three hours and is done under either local anesthesia with a sedative or general anesthesia.  Other, less invasive, procedures can often be done in the office under local anesthesia only.

After Ear Surgery

Patients are generally up and around soon after surgery.  The ears are wrapped in a bandage and/or head garment to protect and aid in healing.  Pain is managed with medication as needed.  Stitches are generally removed within two weeks, but patients should avoid bending the ear for about a month.
